Liposomes

Liposomes explained simply

Don't just take it. Absorb it.

What matters is not just what's in a capsule, but also how much of it reaches the body. That's why many of our active ingredients are prepared in liposomal form. Here we show you how it works in three steps.

Aufbau eines Liposoms: Wirkstoff im Inneren, umgeben von einer doppelten Hülle aus Phospholipiden

How is it different from a conventional capsule?

The difference starts with how the active ingredient is packaged.
Without liposomes

Conventional capsule or tablet

  • The active ingredient is unprotected.
  • Stomach acid and digestive enzymes can break down part of it.
  • Some active ingredients struggle to pass through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream.
With liposomes

Liposomal

  • The active ingredient is embedded in a shell of phospholipids.
  • The shell can shield it on its way through the stomach.
  • For vitamin C, blood levels were higher than with the conventional form in 9 out of 10 human studies.

How it works

From drop or capsule to cell in three steps.

Embedded

The structure of a liposome

Liposomes are tiny vesicles with a double shell of phospholipids. The membranes of our body's cells are made from the same building blocks.

Water-soluble active ingredients sit in the watery interior, fat-soluble ones in the shell itself. That's why liposomes are suitable for a wide variety of active ingredients.

Protected

The journey through the stomach

In the stomach, active ingredients encounter acid and digestive enzymes. The phospholipid shell can shield the active ingredient, while unprotected substances are attacked directly.

Arrived

Uptake into the cell

Liposomes show their greatest advantage in the gut. Their shell is made from the same building blocks as our cell membranes. This allows them to attach closely to the intestinal lining and to cells and release their active ingredient exactly where it is absorbed.

Free active ingredients from conventional capsules and tablets don't have this advantage. Many of them struggle to pass through the intestinal wall, and some are excreted unused.

The result can be measured: for vitamin C, blood levels were higher with the liposomal form in 9 out of 10 human studies. In a placebo-controlled study, vitamin C levels also rose more in white blood cells, in other words directly inside cells.

Pictured: liposomes docking onto the cell membrane and releasing the active ingredient. Free active ingredients have a harder time entering the cell.

What does the research say?

A selection of human studies on liposomal active ingredients.
Vitamin C · Review

A review identified 10 human studies comparing liposomal with conventional vitamin C. In 9 of them, blood vitamin C levels were higher with the liposomal form.

Vitamin C · Double-blind study

In 27 healthy adults, peak blood vitamin C levels were 27% higher with the liposomal form than with conventional vitamin C. More also reached the white blood cells.

Coenzyme Q10 · Double-blind study

In 18 healthy adults, blood coenzyme Q10 levels with the liposomal form were 31% higher at peak and 23% higher over 24 hours than with conventional Q10.

Iron · Crossover study

In 25 healthy adults, blood iron levels rose more after a liposomal mineral supplement than after a standard supplement at the same dose.

Frequently asked questions about liposomes

Made from phospholipids derived from European sunflowers. One part of these molecules attracts water, the other repels it. That's why they arrange themselves into a double layer on their own, just like in the membranes of our body's cells.

Bioavailability describes the proportion of an active ingredient that actually reaches the bloodstream after intake and is available to the body. This is exactly where liposomes come in.

No. High-strength describes how much active ingredient is contained in a daily serving. Liposomal describes how the active ingredient is packaged so that more of it reaches the body. Many of our products are both.

Not necessarily faster, but more gets through. In studies on vitamin C and coenzyme Q10, the peak blood level was reached at about the same time as with the conventional form, but it was higher.

Yes. Most of the data relates to vitamin C: in 9 out of 10 human studies, blood levels were higher with the liposomal form. There are also studies on coenzyme Q10 and iron. You'll find a selection with links above under “What does the research say?”

No. The researcher Alec Bangham first described liposomes in the mid-1960s. They have been used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics for decades.

No, but most of them are. You can recognise liposomal products by their name, for example “Liposomal Magnesium”. View all liposomal products

Drops make it easy to adjust your dose and are ideal for anyone who doesn't like swallowing capsules. Capsules are tasteless, precisely dosed and handy on the go. Powders can simply be stirred into water, coffee or a smoothie.

Shake the bottle well before each use and store it in the fridge after opening. How long an opened bottle keeps is stated on the label and on the product page. Store capsules and powders in a cool, dry place away from light.

Yes. In our value bundles we have already put together tried-and-tested combinations. Stick to the recommended daily amount for each product. If you take medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
