I'm Dr Diego Durán Barata. As a specialist in pulmonology (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) with over a decade of medical experience, I focus on questions that particularly concern people with respiratory diseases: How can we detect pulmonary embolisms early and treat them optimally? What happens in our lungs when they are affected by complex diseases? And how can we use diagnostics and therapies to improve our patients' lives for the long term?

What drives me
Every day at the hospital, I see how differently patients respond to the same diagnosis. While some recover quickly, others struggle with their illness for longer. This observation drives me to delve ever deeper into the mechanisms of respiratory diseases – with the clear goal of finding the best possible treatment for every patient.
What particularly motivates me is the realisation that modern pulmonology goes far beyond simply treating symptoms. By combining precise diagnostics, innovative research and individual patient care, we can now achieve treatment outcomes that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
My career
While studying medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, I realised early on that superficial treatment approaches are not enough for me. I want to understand how respiratory diseases develop at a molecular level and what deeper mechanisms lie behind them.
After graduating in 2018, I specialised as a resident in pulmonology at the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal, gaining hands-on experience working directly with patients. These years taught me how important it is to explain complex medical issues clearly and to find the best solution for every patient.
In 2023, I qualified as a specialist and continued my career at the Hospital Universitario de Getafe, where I deal every day with the complex interplay between lung function, circulation and overall health.
Scientific excellence and clinical practice
The link between research and practical medicine has shaped my entire career. I am currently completing my doctorate as part of a pioneering research project on oxygen therapy for pulmonary embolism at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares – work that has the potential to improve treatment standards for thousands of patients.
My research spans several international studies as well as innovative projects. These projects allow me to integrate the latest scientific findings directly into patient care.
As a member of renowned professional societies such as the European Respiratory Society and SEPAR, I actively contribute to the advancement of pulmonology. My expertise is regularly sought after at national and international conferences, and my work has been published in numerous specialist journals.
