Liposomes – the special technology

Our liposomal technology changes the way nutrients are absorbed by the body.

Thanks to their special structure, liposomes encase the active ingredients they contain and protect them from being broken down in the digestive tract.

This allows nutrients to be transported to where they are needed – right into the cells.

The result is increased bioavailability: a larger proportion of the active ingredient reaches the bloodstream unchanged and is actually available to the body.

Less loss, better absorption, more efficient use.

A medicinal plant from antiquity.

Milk thistle has been valued as a medicinal plant since the days of ancient Greece and Rome. Even then, it was known for its supportive effect on the liver and the gastrointestinal tract. In the Middle Ages, milk thistle was used mainly for liver and gallbladder complaints.

Its importance as a liver tonic has endured over the centuries, which is why it is still one of the most popular medicinal plants in Europe today. A particular milestone in its recognition: in 2021, milk thistle was named Austria's Medicinal Plant of the Year.

Targeted, natural, effective.

Real plant power. For your wellbeing.

Milk thistle owes its importance to a wide range of natural constituents, including flavonoids, bitter substances, tannins and essential oils. The flavonoids play a central role: together, they form the unique flavonoid complex silymarin.

These bioactive plant compounds are known for their diverse properties. They can help to protect the body from oxidative stress, help the body deal with inflammatory processes and support natural resilience to external influences. This makes milk thistle a source of powerful, plant-based support for general wellbeing.

St Mary's thistle.

Milk thistle was highly prized even in antiquity – as reflected in its old Latin name: “Carduus marianus”, “Mary's thistle”. The name refers to the Virgin Mary.

According to legend, during Mary's flight into Egypt, a little breast milk dripped onto the leaves of the milk thistle. This is said to have created the characteristic white markings that still give the plant its unmistakable appearance today.

Guardian of the liver.

Thanks to its valuable plant compounds, milk thistle is traditionally used to support liver function. It is regarded as a plant that can protect liver cells and support the body’s natural detoxification processes.

Milk thistle has also been used for centuries to support digestion and is traditionally valued for digestive complaints. This makes it a holistic, plant-based way to support metabolism and wellbeing.

Questions and answers.

Milk thistle is a plant that grows up to 1.5 metres tall, with an upright, branched stem and heavily serrated leaves marbled in green and white. It is distinguished by its purple, globe-shaped flowers. In the past, milk thistle was used to treat complaints such as stabbing chest pains or a stitch. In the 19th century, the German physician Johann Gottlieb Rademacher discovered its positive effect on the liver and successfully used a tincture made from milk thistle seeds to treat chronic liver damage.

Milk thistle is traditionally used to support normal liver function. Its active ingredient, silymarin, is considered a well-studied plant compound that has been used in natural medicine for centuries. Milk thistle can also support normal digestive function and is often taken as a supplement alongside an active lifestyle.

Melinava Milk Thistle should ideally be stored in a cool (below 25°C), dry place away from light.

Yes! It contains no animal components or ingredients whatsoever, so vegans and vegetarians can take it with complete peace of mind.

The effect of Melinava Milk Thistle can vary from person to person and depends on many factors, such as your individual metabolic rate, the dosage and how regularly you take it. However, many users report noticing an effect quickly, within a few weeks.

Liposomal formulations have the advantage of offering higher bioavailability than conventional food supplements. Silymarin, the active compound in milk thistle, has one of the poorest absorption rates of all: it is barely water-soluble, only partially absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and quickly broken down in the liver, of all places: the very organ silymarin is meant to protect. Liposomal encapsulation solves this problem: the liposomes protect the silymarin on its way through the digestive tract, prevent premature breakdown in the liver and ensure that many times more of the active ingredient actually arrives where it is needed, without putting a strain on the stomach.
